By UN estimates the global population will reach 9.7 billion by 2050 – an increase of 2 billion on today’s figures. Accommodating this rise in population, alongside government Net Zero targets, will place considerable demands on existing food systems, requiring significant innovation in agriculture, manufacturing and waste management. Furthermore, producers, manufacturers and retailers face increased demands from consumers around the sustainability and environmental performance of the food on their plate.
This event explores innovative responses to these challenges. The first part of the session will focus on alternative approaches to protein production, each delivering opportunities to relieve the strain on traditional sources whist delivering environmental benefits.
Following this will be an exploration of an innovative approach to the utilisation of waste and co-products for food and feed manufacture. Key stakeholders will deliver presentations on their contribution to a recent Zero Waste Scotland funded project to develop a novel serial utilisation approach to whisky co-product valorisation.
